How to Choose the Right Domain Name for Your Business?
April 7, 2025 · 5 min read
Your domain name is your address on the internet. Just as you choose a good location for a physical shop, you want a domain name that's easy to find, remember, and trust.
The basic rules
Keep it short
The shorter your domain name, the better. Maximum 15 characters is ideal. People need to be able to type and remember it easily.
- Good: bakeryjanssens.be
- Less good: thebakeryfromjanssensfrombombornem.be
Make it pronounceable
If you can't easily say your domain name over the phone, it's too complicated. Avoid hyphens, numbers, and unclear abbreviations.
Use .be for Belgian businesses
If your customers are in Belgium, choose a .be domain. This builds trust with Belgian visitors and helps with local SEO. A .com can supplement, but .be is priority.
Avoid trends and misspellings
Deliberately using misspellings ("kwality" instead of "quality") might seem creative, but it causes confusion. The same goes for trendy abbreviations that will be dated in 5 years.
Domain name and SEO
Does your domain name affect your position in Google? Indirectly, yes.
Google doesn't directly look at your domain name as a ranking factor. But a good domain name:
- Is easier to remember → more direct traffic
- Builds more trust → higher click-through rate in search results
- Gets shared more often → more backlinks
A domain name with your business name is almost always the best choice. Avoid generic domains like "cheap-websites-bornem.be" — that looks spammy.
What if my desired name is taken?
Your first choice isn't available? Some alternatives:
- Add a verb: bakeryjanssens.be → bakeatjanssens.be
- Use a different extension: .com, .shop, .online
- Add your region: plumberbornem.be
- Contact the current owner — sometimes domains are for sale
Practical checklist
- Is the name shorter than 15 characters?
- Is it easy to pronounce?
- Does it contain no hyphens or numbers?
- Is the .be version available?
- Does it match your business name or activity?
- Can it be confused with a competitor?
