What is Hosting and Why Does It Matter?

May 5, 2025 · 5 min read

You have a beautiful website, but where does it actually live? How can people around the world view it? The answer is: hosting.

Hosting in simple terms

Imagine your website is a shop. Then hosting is the building your shop is in. Just as the location and quality of a physical building matter, the quality of your hosting is crucial for your website.

Technically, hosting is a server (a powerful computer) that's on 24/7 and makes your website available to visitors.

Why does quality matter?

Speed

Cheap hosting = slow website. And a slow website costs you customers and Google rankings. The server your website runs on largely determines how fast your pages load.

Uptime

Uptime is the percentage of time your website is online. Good hosting guarantees 99.9% uptime. Cheap hosting can go down regularly — exactly when a potential customer visits your website.

Security

A good hosting provider protects your website against attacks, makes daily backups, and keeps server software up to date. With cheap hosting, you have to handle all this yourself.

A website that's offline 1 hour per week is unreachable 52 hours per year. How many customers do you miss because of that?

Types of hosting

Shared hosting (€3-10/month)

You share a server with hundreds of other websites. Cheap, but if another website on the same server gets lots of traffic, your website slows down.

VPS hosting (€15-50/month)

You get your own piece of the server. Better performance and more control, but you need technical knowledge to manage it.

Managed hosting (€20-100/month)

The hosting provider handles everything: updates, security, backups, and optimization. Ideal if you don't want to deal with it yourself.

Cloud hosting (variable)

Your website runs on multiple servers simultaneously. Scalable and reliable, but costs can increase with high traffic.

What to look for when choosing?

  • Server location — choose a server in Belgium or the Netherlands for the fastest load times for Belgian visitors
  • SSL certificate — should be included (for https://)
  • Daily backups — so you never lose data
  • Support — is help available when something goes wrong?
  • Uptime guarantee — minimum 99.9%

How I handle it

With my website subscriptions, hosting is always included. I use fast, European servers with daily backups, SSL certificate, and proactive monitoring. You don't have to think about it.
